If you’re exploring the Gulf Coast with kids, you’ll want to add this stop to your list. One sunny day on our way to Fort Pickens, we stumbled upon the most adorable little beach playground tucked away on the sound side of Pensacola Beach. It’s now one of our favorite hidden gems for families looking for a relaxing and fun place to play, splash, and unwind.

Where to Find the Pirate Ship Playground

The Pensacola Beach pirate ship playground is located at 1334–1336 Ft. Pickens Road, across from Pensacola Beach Park West on the bay side. It’s easy to miss if you’re driving by, but it’s worth a stop if you’re traveling with kids.

What Makes This Beach Playground So Special

This charming park features a pirate ship–themed play structure that’s great for toddlers through early elementary ages. Kids can climb, slide, and pretend to set sail on their ocean adventure. The entire play area sits on soft white sand, perfect for barefoot play.

While the play structure doesn’t have shade, there are two nearby covered pavilions where you can take a break, have a snack, or relax while the kids explore. Just before the playground is a small beach area with shallow bay water, ideal for little ones to splash and search for seashells.

The park is open all year long and has no admission fee, making it a great FREE family outing.

Amenities and Nearby Attractions

There is plenty of parking near the playground. If you need restrooms, they are just across the road at Pensacola Beach Park West. This area also includes beach access via wooden boardwalks that lead over the dunes to the Gulf side.

If you’re looking for more activities, you’re in luck:

  • There’s also a spot to launch a kayak or paddleboard, which is fun for tweens and teens.
  • Fort Pickens is only a few minutes away and offers natural beauty and fascinating history. You can explore the fort, walk the trails, and stop by the Discovery Center, open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Fort Pickens is also a great place to catch Blue Angels practice flights. Entry is $25 per vehicle, or you can purchase a $45 annual pass that covers access to Fort Pickens, Fort Barrancas, and Johnson Beach for a full year.

What to Bring for a Fun Visit

Even though there are pavilions, bringing a little extra shade never hurts. Here are a few things we recommend:

  • A beach umbrella or pop-up tent
  • Sand toys and buckets for digging or collecting shells
  • A life vest for little ones who aren’t strong swimmers
  • Water shoes to protect feet from the shells and rocky areas
  • Plenty of sunscreen and water to stay safe and hydrated
