A few years ago, I finally ditched the overpriced country club membership we mainly used for the pool. Instead, I grabbed season passes to Gulf Islands Waterpark, and we’ve never looked back. Located just over an hour from New Orleans on the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast, this water park has become one of our go-to summer adventures. Whether you’re planning a day trip or looking for a spot to cool off all season long, Gulf Islands Waterpark has something for the whole family. Here are six mom-approved tips to make your visit smooth, fun, and totally worth it.

Get There At Park Opening
If you’ve got kids, bags, towels, and roughly 47 other things in tow, you’re going to want a spot to settle in. The park opens at 10 a.m., and I recommend arriving right at opening so you can snag one of the shaded picnic tables or lounge chairs. Shade is prime real estate here, especially during those hot and humid Gulf Coast afternoons. Being able to plop your stuff down under an umbrella makes the day so much easier.
What To Bring and Not Bring To Gulf Islands Waterpark
You’ll want to pack:
- Swimsuits and towels
- Sunscreen
- Hats, flip flops, and maybe a rash guard
- A change of clothes for the ride home
- Cash or a card for food and extras
Leave the cooler and outside snacks at home. Gulf Islands Waterpark doesn’t allow outside food or drinks unless you have prior permission from management. You can leave the park to eat and return as long as you keep your wristbands on.
Your bags will be checked at the entrance, so be ready for a quick security check.
The park provides life jackets and tubes for things like the Lazy Pearl River and the wave pool. If you’ve got a kid who prefers their life vest, you can bring it with you as long as it meets safety standards.
Two Water Play Areas For Little Kids
Two water play areas are perfect if you’re visiting with younger kids. The park’s center has a big splash zone with mini slides and plenty of room to climb, splash, and play. Over by the bigger slides is a smaller second play area that’s great for toddlers and preschoolers who aren’t ready for the big thrills yet.
These areas include attractions like Spray St. Louis, which has fun fountains and water cannons, and the adorable Lil’ Pelican zone made just for little ones..
Height and Weight Requirements For Water Slides
Some bigger attractions have height and weight requirements, so check before hopping in line. Most of the thrill rides, such as the Horn Island Blaster, Deer Island Express, Riptide Racer, and Camille Cutter, require guests to be at least 42 inches tall. These rides are perfect for older kids and teens who love a good adrenaline rush.
There are also plenty of family-style attractions like the rafting adventure slides that let you all ride together and share the fun.
Food at Gulf Islands Waterpark
You can leave and re-enter the park, so packing a lunch and leaving it in your car can help save some money. But if you want to grab food in the park, you’ve got some tasty choices.
- Petit Bois Island Café offers hot-off-the-grill burgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, chili-cheese fries, salads, and more.
- Dockside Pizza serves fresh pizza and Coca-Cola drinks.
- Polly’s Sweet Spot is where you’ll find funnel cakes, cotton candy, mini melts, and shaved ice.
On weekends, food lines can get long. I suggest sending one adult to grab food while the other takes the kids for a relaxing float around the Lazy Pearl River. That way, everyone’s fed and happy without standing around hungry and hot.
Get a Season Pass to Gulf Islands Waterpark
If you plan to visit more than once or twice a summer, season passes are worth it. One-day tickets start at around $30 when bought in advance, but season passes are priced at around $65 to $75 and pay for themselves after just two visits. They also come with extra perks, like discounts and occasional bring-a-friend offers.
We usually go every two weeks throughout the summer. The park is located right off Landon Road in Gulfport, so it’s super convenient for a day trip from New Orleans or anywhere nearby.

Yes pack a picnic lunch to eat outside of the park as the food is very expensive,, but all drinks are free. Instead of trying to get the free tables,, get a cabana !!! The money you would save by packing a lunch could easily pay for a cabana. We had cabana #12 which is right by the kids play area and next to the lazy river,,, with a lazy river entrance close by. The cabana also has a locker for your things and you supply the lock. Having the cabana made our all day stay at the water park much more enjoyable !!
